Ashley Ward - Surf

First of all, we are so stoked to welcome Ash Ward from Eagle Sword Surfboards to the Wanderers Co team, as an ambassador / surfer / shaper / legend.

We first met Ash as any one does in the 21st century, over Instagram and Email. We were immediately drawn to his thirst for life and adventure, and the fact he rips and makes amazing boards helped too (still waiting on our first one hey mate) ;). Growing up in Forster, N.S.W. he’s been shaping boards for 4 years now under some of the Gold Coast’s most experienced shapers.

Ash has now taken an amazing oppurtunity to live out his lifelong dream to live, surf and shape from Indonesia. Before he left, Myles sat down to ask him a couple of quick questions about himself and what drives him.

Myles - How did you get into surfing & shaping?

Ash - My dad started taking me to the beach when I was super young and seeing how stoked he was on surfing made me want to explore it, after a little while the addiction kicked in and I was hooked!

I suppose after surfing so many different boards by so many great craftsmen, you start to think of how a board would turn out if you let your imagination run wild. For 5 or six years I was just experimentally shaping as a hobby then when I had a few consistent models I started to make them for friends.

Myles - What’s the best trip you’ve ever been on?

Ash - The best trip would be the Sahara Desert, we bought a van in Europe and drove it down to Africa crossing the north east coast line. We found some magical waves and experienced some great food and cultures. We were robbed, hassled and fined but we got to score some sweet salty moments!

Myles - What’s planned for the next 12 months?

Ashley - Just keep shaping and testing my boards, I love east coast roadies in Aus but I'd like to get to indo a few times with those nice reef break waves.

Big thanks to Ash Ward for taking the time to speak with us, we’re pumped to see where you’re going in future and look forward to keeping up with your adventures! Cheers legend.
